Scientific Philanthropy,Medical Research and Imperial Networks:The Founding of the Henry Lester Institute of Medical Research

在华创办独立医学研究机构是西方促进中国的医学现代化与维护其殖民利益的重要方式之一。文章一方面通过深入分析雷氏医学研究院的创办过程,考察了科学慈善、医学殖民与英帝国网络之间的复杂关系;另一方面通过分析英帝国网络对雷氏医学研究院的资金来源、知识脉络、人员组成、制度设计的影响,考察了英帝国网络的呈现形式与作用机制,及其促进在中国的医学现代化与医学殖民的双重属性。雷氏医学研究院因此成为“英国外地化”与“中国外地化”的一个关键节点。

Establishing independent medical research institutions in China was one important way for the West to promote the modernization of China s medicine and safeguard its colonial interests.This paper,on the one hand,examines the complex relationship among scientific philanthropy,medical colonization and imperial networks through an in-depth analysis of the founding process of the Henry Lester Institute of Medical Research;on the other hand,by analyzing the influence of the British imperial network on the funding source,knowledge context,personnel composition and system design of the Henry Lester Institute of Medical Research,it further investigates the presentation form and mechanism of the British imperial network and its dual attributes of promoting both the medical modernization and medical colonization of China.Therefore,the Henry Lester Institute of Medical Research became a key node in the“localization of Britain”and“localization of China”.
