In the process of new urbanization, urban agglomerations have been paid more and more attention by the political and academic circles. However, there is no doubt that the unbalanced and inadequate development of urban agglomerations in China is quite prominent. This paper explores the spatial differentiation characteristics of 19 urban agglomerations in China based on the national scale and urban agglomerations scale.Based on the national scale,8 indicators representing the basic characteristics of urban agglomerations were selected to quantitatively measure the development level of 19 urban agglomerations. The research shows that:the development level of urban agglomerations in China has the phenomenon of"two strong, three high, seven medium and seven weak",and the spatial distribution is extremely unbalanced. On the whole, there is a pattern of"high in the south, low in the north, decreasing in the east and west",and the four plates of"east, central, north and west"are obviously differentiated.Based on urban agglomerations scale, this paper, taking the urbanization rate that constitutes the basic regional unit of urban agglomerations as the variable, using the method of spatial autocorrelation, determine the spatial structure of 19 urban agglomerations. The research shows that 5 urban agglomerations have clustered sptial structures,8 urban agglomerations have non-clustered spatial structures and 6 urban agglomerations have random spatial structures.
