Gender Transcendence,Self-exploration and the Cracking of Norms in Sayaka Murata’s Earthlings

当代日本作家村田沙耶香通过作品《地球星人》对性骚扰、无性婚姻、同调压力等社会问题进行凝视与深思,探讨颠覆常识的性别超越、自我探寻与规范破解的可能性。作品中处于社会边缘的三位主人公在一步步走向个体崩坏的同时也逐渐摆脱了规范的禁锢与束缚,丢弃与瓦解了人类身份,实现了个体自由与解放。作者通过《地球星人》向读者展示了社会边缘人物的痛苦与挣扎,并试图为他们探寻一条破解固有规范、指向“非人类”的新出路。

Through her work Earthlings, contemporary Japanese writer Sayaka Murata refects on social problems such as sexual harassment, asexual marriage practices and homogenizing pressures. She explores the possibility of gender-transcendence,self-exploration and the cracking of norms that subvert “common sense.” In the work concerned, three marginalized protagonists gradually get rid of the shackles and fetters of societal norms, discard and disintegrate various aspects of human identity, and realize individual freedom and liberation while stepping towards a collapse of the individual and individualism. Through her Earthlings, the author not only shows readers the pain and struggle of marginalized people in society, but also tries to fnd a new way for them to break fxed norms and orient themselves towards a “non-human direction”.
