In Eugene O’Neill’s plays, the three mothers,Abbie,Nina, and Mary from Desire under the Elm,The Strange Interlude, and Long Day’s Journey into Night, are all rebellious mothers. The specific meaning of their sadness and happiness as mothers and the causes of their sadness and happiness unravel their respective paths in life. Not willing to be hemmed in by the restrictions the historical context imposes on them, the three mothers fight against the patriarchal system in their own way and therefore pay the price and experience sadness. However, they more or less escape the moral blackmail of the laws and regulations in the patriarchal society, pursuing their own lives and happiness.Only by completely breaking the constraints of the patriarchal culture on the mother’s self-development and establishing a truly equal gender culture for men and women will families and society be more harmonious.
