This paper is a study of St.Aubyn's 2017 novel Dunbar,an attempt at novelizing Shakespeare's King Lear. The author starts with careful comparison and analysis of the tragic characters, settings and events in both works, and proceeds to point out that criticisms on King Lear offers many open-ended possibilities forrewriting and re-constructing this canonical tragedy, when the re-contextualization of Lear and King Lear bring new insight into the issues of gender, society, psychology and history of the original in the contemporary world.
