From Jinshi to Educator:The Journey and Cause of Yan Xiu’s Success

不同教育家的成长之路都是不同的,但也有共性。作为一名教育家,严修的成长历经奠基阶段、成长阶段、成熟阶段、成名阶段、超越阶段。从清末进士到教育家,他成功的原因主要包括:教育救国,进退不渝;实事求是,选择创新;勤学不辍,开放包容;严于律己,修身养性;尚公崇义,淡泊名利;对外宽厚,对内精明;经世致用,躬行实践;贵人相助,抱团发展。

The growth paths of educators are different but have something in common. As an educator, Yan Xiu went through foundation stage, growth stage, maturity stage, fame stage and transcendence stage. The main reason for his transition from Jinshi to educator in the late Qing Dynasty is summarized as follows: saving the country through education and sticking to his aspiration, seeking truth from facts and promoting innovation, his diligent, open and inclusive personality, strict self-discipline and self-cultivation, advocating justice and being indifferent to fame and wealth, being easy to other people and hard to himself, being pragmatic and emphasizing practice, and finally getting help from confidants.
