Asian Port Cities in English Scholarship:The Case of Rhoads Murphey

从海外相关文献上看,亚洲港口城市是国外学者进行亚洲研究的重要切入点。在英语世界中,有关亚洲城市主题的文献一直层出不穷,但直到20世纪中期才开始出现严肃的学术论著。这些学术研究最初关注亚洲殖民港口城市的现代化、都市性问题,在后现代主义思潮的影响下,又转向对亚洲港口城市殖民经历的再审视,重估欧洲势力对亚洲的影响。亚洲港口城市研究,成为推动亚洲视角走向国际前台的力量之一,重塑人们对大航海以来亚洲历史的认识。

The present paper contends that the study of Asian port cities in the English scholarship began with Rhoads Murphey, who publishedShanghai:Key to Modern Chinain 1953. Murphey later extended his study from treaty ports in China to entire Asia. Even in the 1980s, Murphey’s influence was still visible in international conferences organized by UNESCO. The present paper discusses intensively Murphey’s study while reviewing briefly the state of study in Anglosphere.
