After the Xi’an Incident, Chiang Kai-shek’s brother, Chiang Kai-ching, died of scare and Chiang Kai-shek was very sad at his brother’s death.During his recuperation in Fenghua, most officials of the Nationalist Government would offer their condolences while visiting him.Later on, when Chiang Kai-shek held a funeral for his brother, the departments such as the Aides Office undertook a lot of preparation and reception work, and senior and local officials of the Nationalist Government went to attend the funeral one after another. The funeral was not just to mourn the dead, officials had rich topics to exchange, and private friendship and political space converged in this place.Behind the crowds of officials attending the funeral, there was an element of friendship and the need to negotiate official business, but more important was a utilitarian consideration in officialdom.Funerals consume a lot of human, material and financial resources. As a matter of fact, all involved are very tired.
