The Second Tenture Chinoise woven by the Beauvais with six tapestries was designed by oil painter Fran?ois Boucher. It is a succession of the First Tenture Chinoise, but Boucher intentionally innovated to make it very different. The motifs of each tapestry, such as Chinese dining, fishing, dancing, grooming, shopping, etc., are different and not related to each other, and do not form a unified theme. Its clients are mainly the French royal family. Most notably, a set of six tapestries ordered for the third time by the royal family was finally sent to China as a gift to Emperor Qianlong, arousing his great interest and giving this set of tapestries important cross-cultural significance. Boucher’s innovation and success in design shows that he understands how to “follow the times”, which still has inspirational value for today’s design.
