To explore the effect of novelty on metaphor processing,a meta-analysis was conducted by employing activation likelihood estimation(ALE),and by referring to 20 neuroimaging studies on conventional and novel metaphors. Results show that conventional metaphors only activate the left hemisphere, while novel metaphors activate the bilateral hemispheres, which basically support the graded salience hypothesis(GSH)and partially support the coarse semantic coding theory(CSC).It also can be found that the right hemisphere has an advantage in the processing of novel metaphors, and the right inferior frontal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus are significantly activated. The superior temporal gyrus is mainly responsible for the semantic activation and integration, while the inferior frontal gyrus is responsible for the selection of semantics.Future research will further explore the relationships between metaphor, insight and creative thinking.
