A Corpus-based Analysis of the Rhetorical Features of Introductions of TED Website’s Science and Technology Speeches

基于106篇TED科技演讲的语料,从修辞学的角度对开场白进行了调查,探讨如何运用修辞技巧来满足听众的需求。学者Dorien Van De Mieroop的开场白模型将修辞技巧分为三个主要功能:attentium、benevolum和docilem。研究表明,attentium使用最多,docilem次之,benevolum第三。约一半的演讲者在开场白部分使用了三类功能下的不止一种技巧,而完整运用三种修辞功能的开场白很少。该结果说明了TED科技演讲的实用性和科普功能,其技巧的选择取决于演讲的内容与主旨,以及演讲者的风格。最后对开场白模型进行了评价,并对研究的教学意义进行了讨论。

Based on the corpus of 106 TED science and technology speeches,this paper investigates the introduction from the rhetorical perspective,in order to explore how to use rhetorical techniques to meet the needs of the audience.The author uses the introduction model of the scholar Dorien Van De Mieroop,who divides rhetorical techniques into three main functions:attentium,benevolum and docilem.The research shows that attentium is the most used,docilem is the second,and benevolum is the third.More than half of the speakers use more than one technique under the three functions in the introduction,while there are few introductions that fully use the three rhetorical functions.The results show that TED science and technology speeches have great practicability in popularizing science.The choice of techniques depends on the content and theme of the speech and the style of the speaker.Finally,the paper evaluates the introduction model and discusses the teaching significance of the research.
