Proust is one of the most influential modern writers in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy career, whose representative work Recalling the Past Years has been quoted and interpreted many times in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy texts. The analysis of these words based on the phenomenological standpoint presents three dimensions: discuss the role of body in memory;reconsider the question of reason and truth;reveal the space-time writing strategy of modern literature. These three directions map out Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical orientation at different stages: in the early stage, he mainly focused on bodily intentionality. In the transitional period he began to focus on the question of linguistic expression. And later on he worked on refining the ontology of existence. This kind of intertextual relationship stems from the common position in grasping the original perceptual experience of both. A clear understanding of Merleau-Ponty’s interpretation of Proust’s work will help us to deepen the understanding the ideological resources and evolution of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical theory.
