Intruder in the Dust weaves a textual tapestry of Confederate historical memories and white lynch mob threat of the 1940s with both a historical dimension and social immediacy. The paper reveals the historical-cultural logic interconnecting the Confederate historical memories, lynching writing and the transformation of the protagonist, and thereby conducts a close reading of the spiraling ascent of Charles Mallison and further examines the significance of this text within American literary tradition. The paper contends that Intruder in the Dust presents Mallison’s inheritance and transcendence of Confederate historical memories, and his critique of and identification with Yoknapatawpha white community. Mallison’s reflections on Confederate narratives, and the tension between him and the white community are instrumental in his spiritual and moral growth, and the paper further argues that the story of Mallison’s growth both inherits and expands the well-established structural pattern and character type of American literary tradition.
