Mavis Gallant’s identity has a great effect on her artistic creation in literature.At the level of individual identity construction,the protagonist of“Linnet Muir Story Cycle”,Linnet has the question aboutherindividual identity.She goes back to her hometown,Canada,to search true self and finally establishes her identity---exile through writing.At the level of national identity construction,Frank,the“remittance man”in“Linnet Muir Story Cycle”,is a Britain immigrant.He establishes his Canadian national identity through joining the army,and gets rid of the control of his mother country.At the level of multicultural identity construction,Berry’s cultural acculturation theory is applied to analyze diasporic characters.Walter in“Overhead in a Balloon”and Carol in“The Other Paris”are immigrants who live in Paris.They desire to assimilate into Paris dominant culture.Walter and Carol are never accepted by local Parisians,whose confusion and failure express the characteristics ofthe marginal group.
