This thesis is based on Bourdieu’s concept of"cultural intermediary"and the theory about cultural production. It tries to understand the editing practice and the impact of academic books by analyzing the editors’notes of more than 50 academic books. The research discovers that academic book editors, with their perceptual love for their profession and specialized knowledge in editing, compete for symbolic capital and activate relevant economic capital in the making of academic books. In this process, academic logic and economic logic go through and guide the editing practice.Academic book editors build up their professional identity in their interaction with people of different roles. They make efforts to reconcile the tension between academic logic and economic logic in order to achieve a win-win situation for both academic value and economic benefits of the books.
