In China,Hans Christian Andersen is mostly known for his fairy tales. However,in Europe,he is also known as a talented poet, novelist, playwriter and travelogueist. After a close observation on the early translation history of Andersen’s tales in China and the route that they took to reach Chinese readers,it is found that the indirect translating and interpreting are the major factors that have led to those biased and deviated understandings about Andersen and his works. The distortions and stereotypes are forged during the double refraction caused by indirect mediations.Nonetheless, indirect mediations have weakened the Danish features and enriched the internationality of the original texts, which has started the canonization of Andersen’s tales in the field of world literature.
