The Politicization of the US Military Operations in the South China Sea:Analysis Based on Feature-intrusive Freedom of Navigation Operations

随着中美战略竞争的加剧,美军在南海军事行动的政治化倾向愈发明显,南海“闯岛”式“航行自由行动”是典型代表。通过研究此类行动与中美关系大事件的关联性,可以发现:除了有关行动的表态和言辞越来越政治化,美军在中国驻守的南海岛礁周围的“航行自由行动”在时机选择方面与中美关系重大议程密切相关,意图对中方施压并配合美国涉华重要议程的推进。“闯岛”式“航行自由行动”只是一个缩影,实际上美军在南海的几乎所有军事行动都在不同程度地政治化。面对中国军事力量的现代化和海洋强国建设,美国变得日益焦虑,原本低调的军事行动变得越来越富有政治色彩,未来这种趋势只会愈演愈烈。

As the China-US strategic competition intensifies,the politicization of the US military operation in the South China Sea has been increasingly evident.The article concludes that the timing of the US military s island-intrusive FONOPs around the reefs and islands in the South China Sea has a clear correlation with the major agenda of China-US relations,intending to exert political pressure on China and conjuncture with the US major agenda towand China.The feature-intrusive FONOPs is just an epitome,underlying which almost all US military operations in the South China Sea are politicized to varying degrees.The US s increasing anxiety has turned its low-key military operations to be progressively political in the face of the modernization of China s military forces and the construction of a maritime power.Predictably,this trend of politicization will only become acute in the future.
