Translating Meaning and Style:Toward a Better Chinese Translation of The Gettysburg Address

The Gettysburg Address是林肯总统举世闻名的政治演说词,也是一篇优美的散文佳作。据不完全统计,迄今为止,至少已有25种汉译本。有的译本整体质量虽高,但在意义理解和风格再现方面仍有诸多商榷之处,有必要指出其中瑕疵,提出改进意见,另拟新译,并就重译问题展开讨论。

The Gettysburg Address is a world-famous political speech of President Abraham Lincoln,as well as a substantial piece of prose writing.At a rough estimate,there exist at least 25 Chinese translations to date.Even among the translations of higher quality,there are still some room for improvement in interpretation of the meaning and in representation of the style of this speech.It is necessary to point out the flaws and provide remedies for improvement.Accordingly,a new translation will be given for reference and issues relating to retranslations will be addressed.
