This article reviews the forty-year delay and the twists and turns in the publication of JosephFran?ois-Marie-Anne de Moyriac de Mailla’s French edition of Histoire générale de la Chine and analyzes the political and academic reasons for this situation:both the complex political symptoms in the 18th century and the conflict with the Latin translation of the Bible caused by the chronological position of ancient history are key to understanding this historical phenomenon.This article also describes the initial response in France and other parts of Europe at the time of publication of the book.Scholars such as Academician Nicolas Fréret and Father Jean Baptiste Gabriel Alexandre Grosier spared no effort to campaign and work for the publication of this work,which indicates the significance and influence of civilization.The analysis of all aspects of its publication is virtually the deconstruction and reorganization of a grand event,which to some extent reveals the spiritual outlook and detailed cultural history of that era.
