Dissemination of Jesuits’Reports on China in England from the 17th to 18th Centuries

17—18世纪,耶稣会士有关中国的报道陆续在英国翻译出版,英国人对此类作品的接受情况可以从这些译本的序言中略窥一斑。英译本作序者一方面驳斥作品里的神迹故事,认为是虚假的,另一方面又以真实和准确原则肯定了除神迹之外的内容的价值。面对耶稣会士中国报道遭到的批评和谩骂,译本作序者强调耶稣会士作品的准确和真实,而这恰恰又是18世纪中后期部分英国人抨击耶稣会士中国报道的依据。

In the 17th and 18th centuries,Jesuit reports on China were translated and published in England,and the reception of such works there can be seen from the prefaces to these translations.On the one hand,the authors of these prefaces to the English translations refuted the miraculous stories in the work as false;and,on the other hand,they affirmed the value of the content other than the miracles by the principles of truth and accuracy.In the face of the criticism and abuse of these Jesuit reports on China,the authors of the English prefaces emphasized the accuracy and the truth of Jesuit works,which in turn were the basis in the middle and late 18th century for some of the British attacks on the Jesuits’reports on China.
