The Polar Silk Road is a co-operative initiative for deepening humanistic communication between China and Arctic Ocean countries, in which Redology plays a special role. In discovering the Icelandic translation of “Drauminn um rauea herbergie”,Hj?rleifur Sveinbj?rnsson offers a new edition for the Redology thus opening a fresh research field for the study of the Sinology in Scandinavian world. This discovery provides a new perspective for understanding the complicated circulation of this great Chinese novel in Northern Europe. As distant from other translating contexts in Northern countries, the Icelandic translation was not originated from Franz Kuhn’s German version, but instead it is grounded upon Chinese common edition of Chengyi version with absorption of some elements from the English version by David Hawkes and John Minford. Hj?rleifur Sveinbj?rnsson attempts to contextualize the Redology into the Icelandic world by adopting a concise approach. This approach has gone beyond Kuhn’s German paradigm. The islandic translation of Dream of the Red Chamber offers a reference for opening a new approach of cross-cultural communication in the context of the Polar Silk Road.
