Jeffery Eugenides’ Middlesex features a hermaphrodite protagonist who narrates the immigration history of three generations of his family and his own upbringing. The protagonist’s immigrant background and experience of gender dislocation have made the topic of identity the focus of research. Using Deleuze’s philosophical doctrine as a theoretical guide, this paper explores Eugenides’ nomadic behavior of becoming the other, celebrating desire, and constantly deconstructing domains at the national, religious, and cultural levels, escaping the limits of a defined identity, breaking the dull and closed past and reality, dissolving the dichotomy, and always residing in the “middle”. The “middle” is a way to return to life itself by escape.
