Coptis chinensis is a perennial Traditional Chinese Medine, which grows in the environment of high humidity and suitable temperature. It is a common prescription medicine in clinic. In recent years, the demand of Coptis chinensis is increasing, but due to the intensified heavy metal residues in the growing environment of plants, the medicinal value of Coptis chinensis is affected and even endanger human health. Therefore, the problem of excessive heavy metals in Coptis chinensis has attracted everyone’s attention. This paper summarized the research results on the source, detection technology and harm of heavy metal residues in Coptis chinensis from 1990s to now, and arranged and compared the heavy metal residue limit standards at home and abroad were compared, in order to provide a reference scheme for improving the safety of coptis chinensis medicine, so as to promote the sustainable development of China’s Coptis chinensis industry.
