Willow pattern, as one of the most popular monomer design in 19th-century British ceramics, are widely recognized artistic expressions produced by the first large-scale encounter between Oriental and Occidental cultures. Taking Willow pattern as example, this paper analyzes the elements in Willow pattern and how the story behind it inherits the framework of expression, and gives an example of how Willow pattern’s framework play an impact through re-contextualization. Recalling the process of the Willow pattern evolving from the initial decorative pattern to a shared cultural icon that precipitated in Western collective consciousness is of great significance to cross-cultural design studies.
