According to Chen Zhiwen(陈治文),the word e'shou(额手)means“to clap hands”in Old Mandarin,in which e is used as e(敆),presenting no relation with the phrase yi shou jia e(以手加额).This paper disagrees and claims that,e'shou does not have the meaning of clapping hands and is simply an abbreviation of the phrase yi shou jia e.Two possible paths of development include:from yi shou jia e to shou'e and then reversed into e'shou;Or from yi shou jia e to both shou'e and e'shou.Diachronically, the phrase yi shou jia e came from the ancient etiquette Kongshou(空首)which then, under the influence of Buddhist rituals, began to refer to the gesture of putting two palms together at forehead level for the expression of congratulation, gratitude, reverence and appreciation.
