Setting Out for a Distant Mountain:The Relationship Between Du Fu and Mountains

杜甫一生常漫游、行走在山间。他与山的关系可以总结为望、行、登三类。杜甫虽然爱山,但他基本不登至高顶,这不仅是因为存在着客观的政治与时间上的限制条件,而且登山对杜甫来说也是生理上和心理上的巨大挑战。杜甫“余时游名山,发轫在远壑”的游山追求,与他“致君尧舜上,再使风俗淳”的政治志向一样,最终未能真正达成。

Du Fu traveled and hiked in mountains throughout his lifetime.His relationship with mountains could be summarized into three categories:gazing,hiking,and climbing.Du Fu loved mountains,yet basically,he didn’t climb to the top,because of some objective political and time constraints and because of a great physical and psychological challenge for him from mountain climbing.Du Fu’s pursuit was“At that time I was visiting famous mountains,I had removed my wheel-block there in a distant ravine.”,Du Fu’s political ambition was“I would make my lord greater than Yao or Shun and cause our customs again to be pure.”.It was a great pity that Du Fu did not actually achieve his pursuit and political ambition in the end.
