Australian writer Alex Miller discusses the relative relation between“self”and“other”in order to discover ways to define immigrants’ cultural identity. In so doing,he proposes that the construction of individual identity is supposed to be predicated on the dynamic social conditions. The image of mirror making its various appearances in different forms reflects the identity of subjects and hampers their efforts to establish their “self”. This paper aims to analyze The Ancestor Game from the perspective of Lacan’s Mirror Theory from three aspects, namely, the opposition between“self”and“other”,the reconciliation between“self”and“other”,as well as the“self”and“polyphonic”mirror images to examine Miller’s understanding of individuals’ cross-cultural identity construction.
