Interpretation of the Four Names Related with Shandong Province:“Yi”,“Qi”,“Lu”and“Qilu”

“夷”“齐”“鲁”与“齐鲁”是山东的古称。研究者认为,“夷”取象于蹲踞,此说值得进一步探讨。对“齐”与“鲁”则有多种诠释,相比之下,“齐”为“弓矢说”最为有据;“鲁”为将鱼放在礼器中献祭神灵之意。“齐鲁”的内涵主要是指礼义之邦、儒学兴盛。

“Yi”,“Qi”,“Lu”and“Qilu”are the ancient names for Shandong Province.Researchers have suggested that the word“Yi”is derived from the word crouching,however,this point is worthy of further discussion.In addition,there are various interpretations of“Qi”and“Lu”:“Qi”means the“bow and arrow”which is the most well documented in history.Besides,“Lu”refers that offered fishes to the gods in a ceremonial vessel.Finally,the connotation of“Qilu”refers mainly to the state of ceremonies,where Confucianism flourished.
