When Peter Qiu gave out 2,000 keys to his 24-hour,hostel-like bar 1874,he did so with the intention of helping friends and strangers alike. The venue could function,he said,as a"home away from home,"a place to crash when your girlfriend kicks you out or life leaves you high and dry.Such altruism not only characterizes Qiu,it also runs deep within the leather couches(which welcome regular surfers)and scattered postcards of 1874’s new branch on Jianshe Si Malu, the second in the city.
