0ver two months,Galen and I had gone from Xi'an to Kashgar;traveling over 5,000 kilometers. We had climbed imperial Huashan Mountain, explored holy Tibetan lakes, hitchhiked with Tibetan cops, camped in the desert and even played volleyball at the foot of one of Chinas tallest mountains. Now,we were at Kyrgyzstan s Issyk-kul,the second largest salt lake in the world by volume, itching to do one last hike before boarding planes and crossing an ocean to return home.
