Chen Yong’s new book “What is Archaeology for” is a monograph that comprehensively explains the process of Sinicization of archaeology and the characteristics of Chinese archaeology. This article further extends and expands the content of the book from the five aspects. Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought is the theoretical foundation and the most prominent feature of the Chinese school of archaeology, which has given archaeology, the “exotic species”, vigorous vitality;field archaeology which rooted its source of life in the Chinese loess has, through generations of practice, formed archaeological stratigraphy and other methods with Chinese characteristics;settlement archaeology and cognitive archaeology, as an interpretative archaeology, belong to the category of “new archaeology”, and the author has made it possible for readers to have a good theoretical understanding and practical reference through meticulously logical exposition and easy-to-understand examples.
