A New Study on Yuan Shikai as an Informant

袁世凯是戊戌政变的关键人物,他在政变中所扮演的角色问题仍有学术讨论的空间。诸多历史细节和袁世凯的种种言行表明,袁在八月初五日请训之前即在北京实施了告密,告密对象极有可能是礼亲王世铎。初五日晚些时候或初六日晨,慈禧给步军统领发出拿人口谕,此时的逮捕名单是个大名单,包括康有为、梁启超和军机四章京在内。谭嗣同于初六日即被捕,初八日被解送到刑部,这个时间与袁世凯在北京实施告密的时间也是完全吻合的。

Yuan Shikai was a key figure in The Coup of 1898, and there is still academic debate about his role in the coup. Many historical details, as well as Yuan Shikai’s words and actions, show that Yuan made an informant in Beijing before asking the emperor for instructions on the fifth of August, and the target was most likely Prince Shiduo. Late on the fifth or in the morning of the sixth of August, Cixi gave the commander of the infantry army an oracle order to arrest people, and at the time the arrest list was longer including Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao and the four ministers of the Military Office who were in the capital.Tan Sitong was arrested on the sixth and transferred to the Ministry of Criminal Justice on the eighth of August. This time period coincides exactly with Yuan Shikai’s time being an informant in Beijing.
