摘要
迪伦·霍罗克斯的《希克斯维尔》(1998)是一部杰出的绘本小说,该小说曾先后荣获包括新西兰艺术桂冠奖、美国艾斯纳奖在内的众多知名奖项。受英国作家托尔金的影响,霍罗克斯经常强调“世界构建”的概念,他在《希克斯维尔》中构建了一个纯真的漫画艺术世界,因此该小说被誉为“写给漫画的一封情书”。本文试图从纯真艺术世界的形象构建、纯真艺术世界的构建方式以及纯真艺术世界的构建动因三个维度出发,对《希克斯维尔》进行条分缕析,借此管窥霍罗克斯的创作理念,揭示新西兰多元文化背景下绘本小说的发展态势以及新西兰人对独特文化身份的坚守。绘本小说《希克斯维尔》具有重要的启示意义,它提醒人们应拓宽对文艺的定义范围,督促人们对其审美范式进行新的思考。
Hicksville(1998)is an outstanding graphic novel by New Zealand writer Dylan Horrocks,which wins many prestigious awards,including the New Zealand Arts Laureate Award and the American Eisner Award.Influenced by J.R.R.Tolkien,Dylan Horrocks tends to emphasize the concept of“world-building.”Hicksville is known as“a love letter to comics”for its building of a pure art world.This paper attempts to analyze Hicksville from the following perspectives:the image-constructing of pure art world,the methods of building a pure art world and the building motivation of pure art world,so as to explore the writer’s creation concept,illuminate the recent trends of graphic novel against New Zealand multicultural background and reveal New Zealanders’adherence to their unique cultural identity.Hicksville is thought-provoking,urging people to broaden the definition of literature and keep reflecting on the aesthetic paradigm.
