The Works of Li Po:the Chinese Poet,translated by Shigeyoshi Obata,a Japanese scholar,was published in 1922.As the world’s earliest English translated anthology,the work gives a comprehensive introduction to the west for the first time,providing information of Li Po’s life and his poetic achievements.The anthology,innovative in many aspects,is of great success.In the anthology,the notes of allusions show wonderful appropriateness and fitness,some being presented concise,some being substituted by English allusions,some being interpreted by relevant cultural information,and some being well-arranged with intertextuality between lines.The success of the work provides beneficial enlightenment for the translation of Chinese classics.
