魏晋南北朝时期别传撰修数量多,种类杂,是这一时期史学多途发展的重要表现之一。唐初以来,别传受到一些学者的批评,他们或认为别传撰修是“史官之末事”,或认为“别传失实,无足为凭”,史学价值不高。事实上,别传是裴松之、刘孝标等人注史的重要文献来源,唐初撰修《晋书》也多从中采择史料,现存别传的佚文,一定程度上可补《晋书》等正史记载的不足。魏晋南北朝时期别传作为门阀政治要求和意识形态鲜活生动的历史记录,体现了史学之真与史学之趣相统一的历史叙事风格。

The Pieh-chuan which is an important representation of the multifaceted development of historiography in the Wei-Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties,are numerous and varied at that period.Pieh-chuan had been criticized by some scholars,who argued that writing Pieh-chuan was the least important thing that official historians did,and Pieh-chuan was“inaccurate and worthless”.In fact,Pieh-chuan is an important source for the annotated history of Pei Songzhi,Liu Xiaobiao and others,and in the early Tang dynasty,a lot of the historical data for JINSHU was taken from Pieh-chuan,and the surviving texts from Pieh-chuan can make up for the inadequacy of the official historical records.Pieh-chuan of the Wei-Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties is a vivid history of the political demand and ideology of the gentry,reflecting a narrative style that is organic unity of historical truth and historical interest.
