The Sound and the Fury, masterpiece of the Nobel Prize winner in literature William Faulkner, tells the tragic decline of the Compson family in the southern American state Mississippi. With the theory of narrative judgments by rhetorical theorist of narrative James Phelan, this paper gives a thorough analysis of the narrative judgments in the novel to indicate that it is through the use of narrative judgments that Faulkner elaborately builds narrative text, creates distinct characters, and guides readers to form different narrative judgments, displaying Faulkner’s excellent narrative skills as a master of literature.
