David Hume’s autobiography, My Own Life, is a literary attempt in moral education. By examining how Hume, driven by vanity, achieved great success in wealth and fame by means of a series of virtues such as diligence, temperance, moderation, and friendliness, this paper argues that My Own Life can be seen as a mirror for the people of the emerging commercial republic, portraying an example of moral and secular success that can be emulated by all.
