Professional Qualification Scheme for Court Interpreting

法庭口译是翻译服务在我国司法领域的精细化和专门化实践,是横跨翻译和法律两大领域的职业活动。法庭口译职业资格的设定应兼顾翻译职业和法律职业的双重特征,既涵盖它们的共性,也吸纳它们的个性。我国法庭口译在准入门槛方面存在着立法空白、认定标准不一致、培训认证与工作内容缺乏衔接等问题,需要通过立法确立和制度细化加以不断完善和发展。

Court interpreting is a highly skilled,specialized and sophisticated profession engaging interpreters to provide assistance in judicial activities. It is a demanding job integrating knowledge and skills from both interpreting and law. As we envision developing a professional qualification scheme for court interpreting in China,reference must be made to both the certification for language professionals and the licensing for legal professionals in China,and to strike a balance between the commonalities and uniqueness in both schemes. To date,there has not been a solid legal basis and uniform standards when determining who is a qualified professional court interpreter in China,and the generalist training and education for professional interpreters do not fully reflect the demands of court interpreting. All these problems call for legislation and institutional arrangements to sustain and boost the development of the court interpreting profession in China.
