A New Study on the Tunnels at the Border between the Song and Liao Dynasties

宋辽边关地道是重要的宋辽军事防御工程,规模巨大、结构复杂,但鲜见于宋人记载。而宋辽边关地道属于北宋河北边防体系中的重要一环,对于宋辽军事史、河北地方史研究以及当下边关地道文旅功能开发具有重要意义,因此,对以雄县为中心的地道布局、始建年代及功用等关键问题作进一步的考察十分必要。宋辽边关地道的大规模兴建,始于澶渊之盟后李允则知雄州期间。李允则在何承矩疏浚塘泊的基础上,以兴建缘边防御工程为掩护,挖掘地道、铺设谍网,使雄州段地道西接容城、东接霸州。宋辽边关地道布局的核心枢纽在雄州,负责刺探情报的河北缘边机宜司即设于此。澶渊议和后,其主要功能由军事防御转变为情报刺探。

The Song Liao border tunnels are an important Song Liao military defense project with a huge scale and complex structure, but it is rarely recorded by the Song people. The Song-Liao border tunnel is an important part of the northern border defense system of the Northern Song Dynasty, which is of great significance to the study of the military history of the Song-Liao Dynasty, the local history of Hebei and the development of the cultural tourism of the current border pass, so it is necessary to further investigate the key issues such as the layout, initial construction time and function of the tunnels centered on Xiong county. The large-scale construction of the Song-Liao border tunnels began during the period when Li Yunze was an official in Xiongzhou after the Treaty of Chanyuan. On the basis of He Chengju’s dredging the pond, Li Yunze dug tunnels and laid spy nets under the cover of the construction of border defense projects, so that the tunnels in the Xiongzhou section were connected to Rongcheng in the west and Bazhou in the east. The core hub of the layout of the Song-Liao border tunnels lies in Xiongzhou, where the Hebei border opportunistic department responsible for spying intelligence is located. After the Treaty of Chanyuan, its main function was to give way to military defense to intelligence.
