As digital reading becomes more and more prevalent in children’s education and daily lives, the impact of electronic picture books on children’s reading ability is becoming a point of contention. But there is still a lack of empirical research on the effects of different picture book mediums on children with special needs,so the study focuses on the effects of paper and electronic picture books on children with special needs in reading comprehension. Results showed that the differences between paper and electronic picture books did not affect the reading comprehension of children with special needs;there were marginal differences in the reading comprehension of children with special needs between paper and electronic picture books by gender, age group, and type of disability, but none of them was statistically significant. This led to the following pedagogical and research recommendations:to explore the potential advantages of electronic picture books to enrich teaching resources for children’s reading;to increase quality reading companionship and support to help children gain quality reading experiences;and to optimize the experimental research design to examine the impact of picture book medium on the reading abilities of children in multiple dimensions.
