George Horton:A Critical Review

乔治·霍尔顿是首位出版诗集的美国非裔诗人,具有里程碑式的意义。本文以霍尔顿的诗歌为研究对象,从自由主题、奴隶与诗人的身份矛盾、艺术特征三个层面展开研究,分析霍尔顿诗歌的思想内涵与艺术价值。霍尔顿的诗歌以自由主题为核心,他是非裔诗人抗议奴隶制的先驱。对于自由的追求使霍尔顿深入思考奴隶与诗人的身份矛盾,这种矛盾在他的诗歌艺术理想中得到舒缓。他的诗歌兼具古典主义与浪漫主义的艺术特征,他的诗歌创作在美国非裔诗歌的发展初期具有一定的代表性。

George Horton is the first African American poet to publish a collection of poems,becoming the milestone figure in African American Literature.This paper takes Horton’s poems as a research object,and studies them from three aspects:the theme of freedom,the identity contradiction between slave and poet,and the artistic characteristics,which aims to analyze the ideological connotation and artistic value of Horton’s poems.Horton’s poems take the theme of freedom as the core,he is a pioneer poet in the fight against slavery.The pursuit of freedom leads him to think about the contradiction between the slave and the poet,then the contradiction is relieved by the ideal of poetic art.His poems have both classical and romantic artistic features,which are the representatives of the early African American poetry.
