When talking about British cinema, we are often confined to its unclear references and blurred boundaries. But the British cinema of the last twenty years is certainly a good sample of the subconscious changes in its society. The overlapping between violence, realism and historical reenactment is a striking feature of the film, which is linked to the disappearance of the national imagination and the rise of populism, and even points to the inevitability of the Brexit. The simultaneous exploration of these three features is like a thread that runs through contemporary British cinema, while relating the political and economic transformation that have taken place in Britain over the last forty years and providing a good pattern for thinking about the causes of British social problems.
