The present paper contends that, in writingGrand Scribe’s Record, Sima Qian consulted predominantly primary sources written in Guwen, that is, the antique scripts. It particularly points out that Guwen in this context does not refer exclusively to more ancient scripts but to the combination of ancient spirit and writing systems. This reflects that Sima Qian had an intellectual affinity with the scholarship prevalent in Qi and Lu of the Warring States.
