Mayfair Yang’s Re-enchanting Modernity Ritual Economy and Society in Wenzhou, China brings her initial questions on civil society, which is a major contribution to the study of religious revivals in post-reform China. The book proposes a dual conception of civil society, shows their theoretical significance for agency within civil society, and discusses three key transformations of Chinese religion in Wenzhou over the past few decades.
