Christopher Marlowe creates two"Machiavellian"figures in The Jew of Malta, one of which bears witness to the demonization of the Jews while the other exemplifies the cultural anxiety of early modern England during its transition from a feudal system to a civil society. This paper argues that the lack of moral concern in the play is the key to understanding its depiction of both the Jewish villain and the"hypocritical"Christian.
