August Wilson devoted his works to constructing an African American cultural community based on black experience, exploring in the dramatic space feasible strategies for African American cultural identity construction under white power's dominant discourse. In Gem of the Ocean,Wilson created a"sanctuary"with rich cultural content, and presented African American way of life, values and spirituality, offering substantial support to the construction of African American cultural identity.Drawing on human geography, this article analyzes various cultural characteristics embodied in the sanctuary from three dimensions-the pragmatic, mythical and abstract spaces, clarifies the concrete manifestations of black experience in physical space, social relation, and cultural imagination, and explicates the complex relationship between August Wilson's dramatic space and African American cultural identity.
