The Hsin Ching Lu,the first textbook of Chinese as a foreign language compiled by Thomas Francis Wade,a British diplomat and famous sinologist,was published in 1859.The motivation for its compilation is to fill the gap in Beijing Mandarin textbooks in the late Qing Dynasty,so as to meet the needs of British interpreters in China to learn Chinese,and Wade’s own language talent and love of language.The compilation of this document is characterized by the emphasis on Chinese culture,orderly and flexible structure,the retroflexion in the corpus,the targeted object,and the diversification of compilation.The Hsin Ching Lu contains many aspects of Chinese culture,paying special attention to both mentality and material culture.Wade’s acceptance of Chinese culture can be seen from the writing style and content.The investigation of the compilation characteristics and cultural acceptance of the textbook can provide inspiration for the compilation of today′s textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
