In the debate over the SemanticsPragmatics interface that has lasted for decades,misdescription is often the focus of controversy.This research reviews different schools of linguistic philosophy on this topic,and explores the role of linguistic encoding and context and the corresponding comprehension mechanism based on a thinkaloud protocol and a retrospective interview,and interprets misdescription on a relevancetheoretic account incorporating default meaning.This study hopes to offer a pragmacognitive account for misdescription,thus contributing to the research on the SemanticsPragmatics interface and the utterance comprehension mechanism.
