Breakthrough and Limit:Spatial Significance of Folk Preaching in Chang’an City of the Tang Dynasty

唐长安城俗讲活动呈现出职业化与世俗化的发展趋势,一方面给都城单调的城市生活带来一股新的气息,释放了城市居民压抑的情绪,使得中古时期城市空间格局和社会思想出现了些许松动;另一方面,其在政治、经济和社会空间层面的渗透亦深受禁断令和政治权力的严密管控和制约。俗讲活动对唐长安城公共空间的影响及其在唐宋都城制度变革中起到的作用尚不能高估,更没有发展到质变的程度。

The folk preaching in Chang’an City of the Tang Dynasty showed the development trend of professionalism and secularization.On the one hand,it brought new vitality to the dull urban life,and helped to release the pressure of urban residents,as well as slightly changed the urban spatial pattern and social ideology at that time.On the other hand,its infiltration into political,economic,and socio-spatial aspects was strictly controlled and restricted by prohibition and political authorities.The influence of the folk preaching on the public space in Chang’an City during the Tang Dynasty and its role in the capital system reform from the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasties cannot be overestimated.And it had not much more contribution to the extent of qualitative change for the capital cities.
