聂云台是民国时期著名的实业家、教育家,也是旅沪湘绅的重要代表。受家风家教的熏染,他具有慈善之心和桑梓情怀。投身实业后,在有“慈善渊薮”之称的上海,他正式开始从事慈善公益活动。聂云台尤其心系桑梓,面对民国时期湖南持续不断的灾情,他赈湘不遗余力,不仅范围广、形式多,而且成效显著,既救济大量父老乡亲,活人无数,又起到联络乡情,缓解社会问题的作用。聂云方台赈湘活动体现出来的公益精神、宝贵经验,值得后人记取和弘扬。

Nie Yuntai was a famous industrialist and educator in the Republic of China and an important representative of the Hunan gentry in Shanghai.Influenced by his family style and family education,he had a charitable heart and sympathies for his fellow-townsmen.After plunging into developing the industry in Shanghai,known as the“birthplace of charity”,he officially began to engage in charitable activities.He was especially concerned about his fellow-townsmen,and he spared no effort in providing relief to Hunan in a wide range and in many forms during the period of the Republic of China.He had a wide range of disaster relief,in many forms,and achieved remarkable results.He not only helped a large number of villagers and saved them from starving,but also played a role in connecting the villagers and alleviating social problems.The spirit of public welfare and the valuable experience embodied in his activities of relieving Hunan province are worth to be remembered and carried forward by future generations.
